Eagles and mosquitos, Cougars and Coyotes

Another frosty morning to chill our bones and get us winter ready! We made our way up to the frosted forest. As we hiked, we played “Camouflage!” The Cobblers have to scatter and hide in the forest before the eagle counts down to zero. They scramble to completely disappear from sight, round after round, hiding closer and closer to the eagle.

While a fire was lit, we sat down for snack and prepared for our flint and steel challenge! Student were broken up into four groups, and each had a chance to practice their flint and steel skills and get a fire together. Fires were lit with only a little bit of coaching and many successes.

The eldest of the group were given bow drills and although they learned some lessons and enjoyed the challenge, they didn’t get a fire (this time!). We celebrated with some tasty fire-roasted bread on a stick and then continued on into lunch roasting hot dogs, drinking hemlock tea (the healthy kind!), and sharing delicious cupcakes. As we sat around our central fire, we heard a story about why Mosquito whispers in people’s ears.

Next, we continued working on our building projects. The bridge continued to grow! And the treehouse is just starting to take shape!

We finished off our day with a version of Kick the Can that has been around from the early days of Flying Deer, called Cougar and Coyote. Cougar is protecting his magic eyeball and it’s Coyote’s job to kick it out of his den to free his Coyote friends when spotted. We made it back to the sunny field to play Bobcat Dodgeball before pickup!
