Hot CHAGA-late in the Sunshine

The day began with some silence and a moment of gratitude. We continued with a song to bring our hearts together, “I can feel my heart beat…” And rounded off our day circle with a reminder, we are stronger together as one of the Explorers attempted to break many sticks bundled together.

We broke out into a wild running game to warm our bones and challenge our speed and agility: “Fire in the Forest!” Animals have to make it from one safe place to another to survive the fire in the forest (a noodle-handed staff member). We sat in the sunshine and enjoyed our snacks in the cool grass. The air was filled with stories, “would you rathers,” and laughter.

Into the forest we went for a fire challenge. Hanging high in a bucket was a prize. The only way to get the prize was to build a fire structure in 10 minutes and light the fire with a flint and steel. After gathering all of the sticks, we paired up to try our luck with flint and steels. When the rope was burnt, the bucket fell.

We roasted apples and made Hot Chagalate over the open fire. Here’s the recipe:

  • Chunk of Chaga mushroom boiled in water until water turns dark
  • 1 pint coconut milk
  • Cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste

We roasted the rest of our home-brought goodies, while listening to the tale of “How Bear Lost His Tail.” After lunch, the camp broke out into smaller activities. Some had pine cone wars, some built shelters, some drank more hot cocoa, while some carved and others burned bowls.

And just like that, our day was done, and with one more round of “Heart Beat,” we were out of the forest and on our way home!

Until next month!
