A Saturday SNOW EXTRAVAGANZA

Today was a beautifully crisp snow extravaganza! Upon arrival, our Saturday Explorers were invited to begin constructing their respective quinzees (big ol’ mounds of fresh powdery snow, left to compact for an hour or two, then carved out into a domed shelter—a more temporary cousin to the igloo), enjoy some sledding time, or experience some grounding snow meditation. Morning circle brought an icy riddle from Hawk Moth, an invigorating series of animal forms from Chickadee, and a more thorough introduction to quinzees from Red Oak.

There was a great deal of fervor around mounding as much snow as possible before snack, with a great to-and-fro of sleds and shovels. One group went wandering in search of wildlife tracks and deer antler treasures (and saw white-tailed deer, and a troop of turkeys).

Once both groups had excavated their quinzees, a full-field snow game of Capture the Flag ensued, with much camaraderie on every side, great throws from snow-ball turrets, and several daring attempts at misdirection and rescue before an actual, full-on authentic tie! In celebration, maple candy, cooked over the central fire, was shared by all!

Looking forward to next time,
